Open Competition Shoot

2006     (2005)    (2004)

The Ballyvea Open Competition began on Friday evening and continued on Saturday with scores being carried over for a final on Saturday evening.  This is the biggest event in the Club Year with big prizes open to all Shooters for the J Graham & Sons Cup with a Shield for the highest Club Member.

On Friday, the two layouts were kept busy all night as 15 lines were shot with Brian Robinson, Matt Smyth followed by Sam Haugh near the end returning a straight of 20/60.  That left the three men with the job done and only a bit of practise to do on the Saturday as they prepared for the final. A number of shooters came close to the straight a number of times with only one or two second barrels.  Depending on the number of straights that would be shot on the Saturday these scores could prove to be useful as there was a total of 7 prizes up for grabs.  Shooters who left on the Friday night with just a nic on 20/59 were: Keith Edgar, Ian Chambers, Willie Robinson, Kenny Irvine, David Megaw and Stephen Bickerstaff.  Close behind on 20/58 were: Alan Charleton, Orr Forsythe and Stephen Wackett.

On Saturday conditions were much trickier as the wind had picked up compared to the mild night before so any straights were going to be very tough.  Hugh Forsythe, no stranger to a bit of wind and not long off a fishing boat, joined the top men with a 20/60 on his third line after two lines with two nics each time.  Stephen Wackett continued his good form as he moved across the score board to join those with just a nic on 20/59.  Raymond McKnight and Leonard Graham also shot well on each line just narrowly missing the straight a few times and joined the growing list of shooters who came so close.  The Club also welcomed a number of new shooters on Saturday from outside the local area namely John Jennett, Guy Carlisle and John Ehrhart.  All men were shooting well but it was Guy Carlisle who managed a straight after a few close calls to be the last man to make it on the score board with a 20/60.

With 5 straights up it was time for the final on Saturday evening just after 5pm.  Matt Smyth was unable to get back on time so it left a squad of four to shoot off for the J Graham & Sons Cup and a High Gun prize of £80.  Three out of the 4 men in the final were Club Members so they were also shooting for the Members Shield.  In the final it was Guy Carlisle who continued his excellent form shooting to a nic on 20/59 for High Gun and the Ballyvea Open Winner for the J Graham & Sons Cup.  Hugh Forsythe was next missing his first target out but held on to finish on 18/54 and take the Members Shield and AA/A/B winner.  One point behind was Sam Haugh on 18/53 for C/Novice winner with Brian Robinson just behind on 18/51 for 2nd in AA/A/B and Matt Smyth slotted into 3rd as he was unable to be there.  With Class C/Novice to be sorted it also needed David Megaw and Stephen Wackett to have a 20 Bird Shoot Off to decide 2nd and 3rd.  David finished with 19/55 and Steven on 17/51.

The 12 Bird Pool Trap saw a good number of entries on both days.  A number of competitors came close missing only one or two birds and was additive for some of those who came agonisingly close.  Two men, John Walmsley and Stephen Irvine hit 11 ex 12 four times but unfortunately never got all 12 targets.  David Martin and Alan Charleton also managed 11 targets but it was Charles Martin and Raymond Graham who took out all 12 targets.  In the final it was Raymond who beat Charles by just one target.

Sam Graham represented the J Graham & Sons Group of Companies who sponsored the High Gun prize and presented the winners with their trophies and prizes.

2005     (2004)

The Ballyvea Gun Club Open Competition was held on Saturday with the J Graham & Sons Cup up for grabs for only the second time and £100 pounds of prize money from the Club. Shooting got under way at 10:30 with some shooters having other events to attend later in the day and also saw some returning in the evening to have another crack at the clays.
Stephen Irvine held the lead early on with a 24/71 with David Megaw tight behind on 24/70. The next couple of lines where shot in thick fog as it very quickly crept in making it hard to see the clays. Within half an hour a small breeze picked up and left sunshine for the rest of the day leaving ideal shooting conditions.
Andrew Annett with a straight 25/75 on the fifth line of the day set the target for all to equal but this proved to be a step to far for most of the competitors. Willie Robinson and Hugh Forsythe came closest dropping just one point as one target needed the second barrel. Raymond McKnight and Stephen Bickerstaff were also close behind, again breaking all 25 targets but using the second barrel twice. Leonard Graham was very unlucky as he lost concentration thinking about the change of posts to let one away as he bottom barrelled the rest to finish on 24/72. Four shooters finishing on 24/71 were Stephen Irvine, Sam Haugh, Sam Hughes and George Gracey with David Megaw the only other competitor to make the 70 point mark.
However on the last line of the day, Kenny Irvine on a 25/72 decided to fill up the last card to get it under way and notched up a straight 25/75 to leave a shoot off with Andrew Annett for 1st place. Willie Robinson and Hugh Forsythe would also join the two men to decide 3rd place.
In the shoot off Andrew dropped three birds and had a second barrel to finish on 22/65 while Kenny broke all targets only second barrelling two to finish on 25/73 with Willie finishing in third just ahead of Hugh.
The pool trap was shot over 12 birds with a few competitors hitting 11 birds but missing one along the way. John Walmsley was the only person who managed to hit all 12 birds and received a beautiful clock with a hunting scene on it which was kindly donated by Valerie Coulter.
A new shield donated by Sandy McConnell for the highest score by a club member at the Ballyvea Open Competition, was presented to Andrew Annett by Sandy’s son Mark as this year the Club Chairman won the Graham Cup excluding him from the shield.

2004

The first 50 Bird competition of the year by the Club was held on Saturday 5th June with £100 of prize money, trophies and the newly donated J. Graham & Sons Cup up for grabs.  Stephen Bickerstaff emerged as the first winner of the new Cup and put pressure on the rest of the competitors early on with a score of 50/149.  Sam Haugh also on the first line out with Stephen returned a score of 50/145 that was equalled by William Robinson later in the day.  Matt Smyth returned a score of 50/149 to earn a place in the shoot off for 1st to 4th place.  In the 4 man shoot off Stephen edged out Matt for first place and Sam Haugh also secured third place ahead of William Robinson.

The Pool Trap was busy for most of the day with a large number of 10/10 birds scored.  John Walmsley who also had the most 10/10 scores kept up this level of scoring in the final to win the event ahead of Keith Edgar and Matt Smyth.

After the final Sam Graham of J Graham & Sons then presented the trophies to the winners.  The Club would like to thank Trevor Graham for organizing the new Cup on behalf of J Graham and Sons that will be contended for each year and all the Competitors who took part in making the day a success.  The Raffle for 250 cartridges was won by Hugh Chambers after Sam Graham pulled out his own name the first time and decided to draw again.
