23rd January 2010
|
Ballyvea Gun Club’s
latest shoot was on Saturday 23rd January. Twenty
competitors attended shooting 16 lines. As the season is now
drawing to a close with only a handful of shoots remaining,
league points were at a premium for some.
In the unclassified
section of the league, Warren Quinn extended his lead over
Johnny Main and in the classified section of the league; Ronald
Sloan has now got 225 points and has the maximum score
available. Second in the classified looks like it is headed in
the direction of the Robinson family with Brian and Willie on
212 points each. Should any of the Robinson’s slip up, Orr
Forsythe or Alan Charleton can nip in and take home a piece of
silverware.
Four competitors managed
to record a 20/60. Ronald Sloan, Alan Charleton, Sandy
McConnell and Willie Robinson. David McBride, Ian Chambers and
Orr Forsythe were all on 20/59, Brian Robinson 20/58, Warren
Quinn and Gary Laffin on 20/57 and 19/57. The club’s website is
now up and running again and updated. Next shoot at Ballyvea is
on Saturday 20th February.

|
20th January 2010
| The next shoot at the Head
Road by Ballyvea Gun club will take place on Saturday 23rd
January with an 11am start. There are only three shoots
left in the 2009/10 season, so points will be at a premium with
the competition still fierce.
In the classified section of the league,
Ronald Sloan has the comfort of having the league won as he now
cannot be caught. Brian Robinson lies ten points ahead of
Willie, who currently lies in third. Willie however cannot
sit so comfortable as Alan Charleton and Orr Forsythe are
snapping at his heels for the third place.
In the novice section of the
league, Warren Quinn leads Johnny Main by nine points. Garath Hanna and
John Haugh (Ballyvea) will be fighting it out for third place, with
Garath holding the advantage over John by nine points.
Aaron Smyth will be hosting a
fundraising shoot at his home on Drumdreenagh Road, Rathfriland on 30th
January. All proceeds will be going towards local members of the DTL
Teams who will be representing Northern Ireland in South Africa in March

Monday 28th
December
The competition for the
Samuel Chambers Memorial Shield took place on Monday 28th
December at Ballyvea. The competition attracted almost 50
competitors shooting a total of 43 lines. Bright sunshine made
targets difficult for a short time but all in all the weather
was favourable for shooting. Twelve men managed to make the
final with a straight. The first squad was made up of Andrew
Annett, George Gracey, Trevor McGibbon (last year’s winner), Orr
Forsythe and JP Smyth. It was Trevor who came out on top in the
first squad with a 20/59. The second squad was made up of Guy
Carlisle, Hugh Ervine, Ronald Sloan, Sam Haugh and Willie
Robinson. Guy Carlisle recorded a 20/60 along with Hugh Ervine.
The third squad consisted of David Henning, Leslie Chambers and
David McBride on 20/59 and Alex Graham also 20/59, both of who
were shooting for second and third place in the Novice Shield.
Leslie Chambers was sure of winning this after shooting a
20/60. Guy Carlisle and Hugh Ervine were left to shoot off
again to establish first place in a single barrel competition.
Guy managed to hold off the challenge from the NI Team Manager
by 18 points to 16 to win his second trophy at Ballyvea in nine
days. Third place was shared between Trevor McGibbon and Ronald
Sloan.

Ballyvea Gun club’s
final shoot of 2009 was the Kenny Irvine Memorial Cup and what a
competition it turned out to be. There were forty six shooters
shooting a total of 39 lines with 13 making it to the final
shoot-off. The first squad consisted of Ronald Sloan, Mark
McKeown, Guy Carlisle, George Gracey and Junior Shooter Aaron
McDowell. Guy Carlisle and George Gracey recorded another 20/60
each. The second squad of four saw Ronnie Peters, Aaron Smyth,
another junior shooter, David Henning and Hugh Ervine. Aaron
Smyth was the pick of this squad with a 20/28. The third squad
of Ian Chambers, Willie Robinson, Raymond McKnight and Sandy
McConnell saw Ian Chambers and Willie Robinson join Mark McKeown
on 20/59 for a shoot off for the final piece of silverware. It
was all down to Guy Carlisle and George Gracey to see who would
take home the magnificent new trophy presented to the club by
the Irvine family in memory of Kenny. In the single barrel
final it was Guy Carlisle who came out the victor. Guy had
recorded a hat-trick of wins at Ballyvea, having won all of
their Christmas shoots inside two weeks. This was a great
display of shooting by anyone’s standards of someone who is in
fine shooting form. The shoot-off for third place was won by
Willie Robinson. The brother and sister of the Club’s late
chairman presented the cup and trophies to the winners.

eventual winner was Alex Beauchanan who received a box of shells
as his prize.
The Inter-Club
competition between Rathfriland and Ballyvea was this year won
by Ballyvea by six points. Hugh Ervine presented the trophy to
Andrea Irvine.

Ballyvea Club would like
to thank all those who supported their shoots over the past year
and to all of our sponsors. Wishing you all a Happy New Year
and good wished to the NI DTL shooting team who will be
